Event Description
Known to Chardonnay-lovers around the world, the wines of Michael Brajkovic are some of the finest in New Zealand. Based just outside of Aukland, Kumeu River craft a range of beautiful single vineyard wines including the legendary Mate's Chardonnay.
Our latest online 2-parter will showcase the finest wines from Kumeu River, delivered to your door, to be enjoyed over a pair of Saturday evenings.
- Ray's Road Pinot Noir, 2018 (RRP £27.65)- The newest vineyard from Kumeu River and their first in Hawkes Bay, Ray's Road is a limestone site at (relatively) high altitude. Pure red fruit flavours of cherry and strawberry with subtle oak spice are backed with fresh acidity and gossamer tannins, the finish is long and mineral-filled. Plenty to come from this beauty!
- Hunting Hill Pinot Noir, 2013 (currrent vintage RRP £25)- Planted with Pinot in 1994 with cuttings taken from some of the finest Premier Cru sites in Burgundy, this is one of the oldest established Pinot sites in New Zealand. We are extremely privileged to be able to purchase the 2013 vintage which is showing beautiful evolution right now. Classic strawberry and raspberry fruit backed with a touch of mushroom and gameiness, acid and tannin beautifully integrated. A rare treat!
- Coddington Chardonnay, 2018 (RRP £38)- One of Kumeu River's 'Premier Cru' sites it's lighter in body, more refined and more elegant than the powerhouse Mate's. Rich, ripe stonefruit flavours with peach and necatrine, the oak is nicely integrated with flavours of vanilla toast and hints of creamy hazelnut. Dangerously drinkable with its satisfying balance of opulence and freshness with a crisp long finish.
- Mate's Chardonnay, 2018 (RRP £50)- The vineyard that started the Brajovich's journey back in the 1940s, today it bears the name of Michael's father, Mate. The 'Grand Cru' in the portfolio is a gem of a Chardonnay; Jancis Robinson herself said this wine "made me think involuntarily of some Corton-Charlemagnes". Huge concentration of flavour in the fruit with pronounced notes of red apple, peach, mango and guava. Precise, taut steely acidity which lends the structure for ageing. Quite a luxury to drink it so young, but seriously tasty for it!
As usual, you'll be joining Laura live on zoom to enjoy your bottles together. All sessions will be recorded in case you need to catch up later and you'll have access to a shared online folder where recipe cards, maps, technical cards and any other bits and bobs which we think will enhance your online tasting experience .
We are seriously excited to have landed 24 bottles of this fabulous parcel of Kumeu River wines, the Mate's Chardonnay is a modern classic and not readily available. The aged Pinot Noir is a rare treat indeed!
