Event Description
The Viranel estate, in the heart of Saint-Chinian in southern France, has been in the Bergasse family since 1551! Brothers Nicholas and Arnaud Bergasse are today creating an outstanding range of wines, arguably the best in the appellation.
From their perfect position in the Languedoc the brothers are taking a fresh approach and with irreverent humour making fabulous wines like their Arômes Sauvages ('wild wine' made from the ancient grape variety Alicahte Bouschet) and their lauded 'V de Viranel'.
We can surely learn lots about 'Saint Chinian' and what it is supposed to represent directly from meeting one of its top wine producers!

The white wines from this estate are little gems and their Viognier a surely a feather in their cap. Come taste great freshness and aromatic intensity in a Viognier that neatly avoids being another oily, overblown example.
As for the reds, so many wines are generally managed during fermentation using 'pumping over' or 'punching down' to extract colour and flavour, but the Bergasse brothers do it differently. They are champions of 'rack and return', a technique where fermenting must is evacuated from a tank and then poured back in to break up the cap.
If you've not tried Alicante Bouschet before, prepare to add that one to your repertoire. And their 'V de Viranel' is a silky blend of Syrah and Greanche that respected wine critic Andrew Jefford once called 'Saint-Chinian Grand Cru'.
