Event Description
Come and meet winemaker Andrew Gunn joining us all the way from Elgin in South Africa!
Andrew will be bringing wines made from his Iona estate and two including fruit from his wife's lower elevation farm, Brocha. The lineup includes three estate wines, a single-vineyard Chardonnay, a gorgeous top-flight Syrah and an inspirational red blend (see below).
In a country where cool-climate locations are like gold dust, Andrew's vineyards are veritable nuggets. At 420m above sea level and overlooking the Atlantic ocean, Iona has some of the coolest vineyards in the whole of the Western Cape.
With an extremely long growing season, Andrew can create wines with complex flavours and a fresh style. The land is farmed according to organic and biodynamic practices to nurture the health of the soil while pests are kept under control by a resident flock of geese roaming the vineyards.
Elgin is highlighted in all major wine books as a region of note, yet in 1997 when Andrew first decided to buy his property Elgin was undeveloped and filled with apple farmers. His subsequent success with wine, along with a handful of other producers, is the reason the region has now garnered world recognition.
