Event Description
The Wine Society is one of leading suppliers of wine in the UK. Underpinned by it's unique membership/ownership business model, it provides a huge range of wines at very competitive prices all backed by great customer service.
Alongside wines with the makers name on the label, the Wine Society also offers many wines under their own name, including the prestigious "Exhibition" Range. In this 3-week on-line course we look at 6 of their Exhibition wines, all great examples of classic wine types.
Week 1 - Wednesday 23rd August
We start our journey with 2 classic French wines:
Firstly, from Alsace AC a Gewurztraminer, produced on behalf of the Wine Society by one of Alsace's most respected producers - Hugel. This wine is described as expressing the lushness of the vintage with rosewater and sweet-spice aromas. Full, but dry, and gorgeous. Retail Price £16.50.
Secondly, we drop down into the Rhône Valley for a Vacqueyras AC, produced on behalf of the Wine Society by leading Rhône winemaker Domaine Le Clos Des Cazaux. Mainly Grenache, with a little Syrah, this is a full-bodied wine with pronounced red and black fruits. Retail Price £11.95.
Week 2 - Thursday 31st August
In week two we journey outside Europe, firstly to New Zealand for one of the most popular wine styles, a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Elegant, mineral, citrusy and crisp New Zealand sauvignon which is a nod in style to the classic sauvignons of France, rather than the more opulent Marlborough stereotype. This is pretty on the nose, with crisp apple and elderflower notes. The palate is focused, infinitely refreshing and shows bright lemon and gooseberry notes. Retail Price £12.50.
Secondly, we journey to Chile for the quintessential Chilean wine - a Carménère, made for the Wine Society by one of Chile's best winemakers - Koyle. This is made on a coolish spot in Chile for this variety to make a more drinkable style. It's ripe yet fresh with some cabernet franc and petit verdot included in the blend to add a little complexity. Retail Price £11.50.
Week 3 - Wednesday 6th September
We conclude our short exploration of the Wine Society's Exhibition range back in Europe. We start with an absolute classic - a White Burgundy, specifically a Saint-Aubin AC from the Côte d'Or, as with all the other wines in their range, the Wine Society have worked with a very well-regarded local producer for this wine Henri Prudhon. Floral and apple-scented white Burgundy from the cool village of Saint Aubin, which preserves a cool freshness even in a warm year. Barrel fermentation rounds out the palate. Retail Price £19.00
Our final wine is again a classic - a Rioja Reserva DOCa, made for the Wine Society by respected traditional producer La Rioja Alta. A smooth and exotic bottling from La Rioja Alta, full-bodied, round and concentrated with the spicy, oaky quality, from long ageing in American barrels, that fans of this traditional Spanish style adore. Retail Price £17.00.
This course is delivered over "Zoom", so you can enjoy the wines from the comfort of your own home. The price of the course includes the wines, which will be delivered directly to your home by the Wine Society on our behalf.
To allow sufficient time to make the delivery, orders should be placed by Friday 18th August.
