Event Description
Wine school owner Jimmy Smith is VERY excited about this one. In November 2023, he travelled to the absolutely stunning city of Vienna to discover the vineyards of the city as well as surrounding areas such as the Burgenland, Kamptal and Wachau. One of the real surprises was the visit with winemaker Alf Wimmer from the Wieninger winery located in Vienna. Wieninger is one of no fewer than 630 wine producers who call Vienna home, meaning that it has more wineries within its city limits than any other capital in the world. Jimmy tasted over twenty wines on his visit and, as a first, every wine he rated as very good or outstanding. The consistent quality from this winery is so high that he had to launch an online tasting!
Wieninger
Wieninger is considered a pioneer of the ‘New Vienna’ wine movement, combining a sense of modernity and progress with the traditions of the region. Weingut Wieninger is comprised of 50 hectares of biodynamically-grown vines on two main sites: Bisamberg (35 hectares) and the smaller Nussberg (15 hectares), separated by the Danube river. Drier and sunnier Bisamberg is characterised by light, sandy loess soil which makes for fresh wines with a vibrant acidity. In contrast, Nussberg has shell and limestone soils with a high clay content, giving wines greater richness and deeper fruit aromas.
Best enjoyed young and fresh, the Riesling has notes of peach with hints of mango and pineapple. The lively palate shows good complexity with flavours of sweet stone fruits. The Pinot Noir Select has ripe cherry aromas complemented by delicate spice notes. The palate expresses a bright acidity and soft tannins. Wieninger also makes a traditional Viennese white – Wiener Gemischter Satz DAC – from its separate sites, that include historically the most precious vineyard in the Vienna region: the Rosengartl. This unique style is a field blend of varieties which are grown, picked and fermented together, showing the individual characteristics of each vineyard rather than of a specific variety. Fritz’s blends contain Weissburgunder, Neuburger, Welschriesling, Grüner Veltliner, Sylvaner, Zierfandler, Rotgipfler, Traminer and Riesling.
