Event Description
Ribeiro in Galicia
Ribeiro DO (Denominación de Origen) is located within the Galicia autonomous region of Spain. It is located between the famous Rias Baixas to the west and Ribeira Sacra to the east. Winemaking has long been important to Ribeiro – the Romans introduced the tradition in ancient times and Cistercian monks acted as custodians throughout the Middle Ages. Since early times, wine has been the region's primary source of income and employment. Four rivers – the Barbatino, Avia, Arnoia and Miño – converge here, and vineyards line the river valley floors and terraces cling to the steep hillsides. The principal grape varieties are Treixadura, Torrontes, Godello, Loureiro and Albarino. White wines account for around 85 percent of all wines produced in the DO and pair wonderfully with seafood from the Galician region. Although Ribeiro's red wines have yet to achieve the commercial success of their white counterparts, there are some producers who have successfully experimented with Caino, Mencia, Brancellao and Souson grapes.
Coto de Gomariz
Coto de Gomariz is a pioneering winery located in the zone of Ribeiro near Ourense where the slopes overlook the Avia river and consists of 27 hectares. It was founded by Ricardo Carreiro Ameijeiras (Caco) in the 70’s when he managed to get back to his birth land after emigrating to South America like many other Galicians to live their dream: to make wine that would be recognised all over the world and bring Gomariz back to its glory as a historical wine producing area. Ribeiro would not have the recognition it has today if it wasn’t for Ricardo and the gang. Schist, granitic and sandy soils, steep slopes, tiny yields and a unique microclimate make this spot ideal for growing the local varieties which include Treixadura, Godello, Loureira and Albarino along with local red varieties. Ricardo Carreiro and winemakers Xose Lois Sebio, Inma and Miguel Pazos have introduced biodynamic principles, and are producing great wines at great prices.
