Event Description
There are wine tastings… and then there are evenings like this.
We’re incredibly excited to be welcoming Kanonkop Estate to West London Wine School, for a tasting that promises to be as insightful as it is delicious. Widely regarded as South Africa’s “First Growth,” Kanonkop has earned its place among the world’s great wine estates through decades of uncompromising focus and consistency.
And what makes this evening particularly special is that we won’t just be tasting these wines — we’ll be exploring them together with Francois van Zyl, joining us directly from the estate and offering first-hand insight into the vineyards, the cellar, and the thinking behind each wine.
Kanonkop
Perched on the slopes of the Simonsberg in Stellenbosch, Kanonkop is synonymous with excellence — particularly when it comes to Pinotage. Their wines have helped define what the grape can achieve at its very best: structured, age-worthy, and unmistakably expressive. Alongside this, their Cabernet Sauvignon stands as a benchmark for the variety in South Africa, combining depth, precision, and remarkable ageing potential.
What we love most about Kanonkop, though, is that their reputation isn’t built on modern tricks or fleeting trends. In the cellar, tradition still leads the way. Fermentation takes place in open-top concrete vats, with manual punch-downs and a hands-on approach that has remained largely unchanged for generations. It’s a philosophy that prioritises texture, balance, and a deep sense of place — and it shows in every glass.
This is also very much a family story. The estate has been guided by the Krige family for generations, with a quiet confidence that comes from knowing exactly what they stand for. That clarity has helped secure Kanonkop’s position not just as a South African icon, but as a benchmark on the global stage.
For this special evening, we’ll be tasting a rare and carefully curated line-up spanning multiple decades, offering a unique opportunity to explore how Kanonkop’s wines evolve over time.
