Course Description
The Level 3 Award in Sake is a fantastic course designed for anyone wishing to gain in-depth knowledge of sake, and is highly recommended for all sake enthusiasts who want to deepen their understanding of sake. Led by our Sake expert Sarah, you will develop your knowledge and understanding of sake and taste an expansive range of sakes.
If you are an employer wishing to train your staff this course will equip them with knowledge and understanding of a wide range of products. This course is also suitable for someone in a supervisory level position in sake sales and service.
EVENING SESSIONS - WHO ARE THEY DESIGNED FOR?
- We run evening sessions for those who can not sacrifice a weekend or are busy working in the hospitality trade at weekends or those who work during the week.
- The sessions run for approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, starting at 7pm and finishing at approximately 9:30pm
- There are 9 sessions (every week) and an exam session, spread out over 2 months. This enables you to learn this challenging syllabus over a longer time period. The final exam day is 7pm - 10pm.

MANDATORY PRE-COURSE INFORMATION:
You will be required to complete a monitored online 'Introduction to sake' module which you will have access to before attending the classroom-based element of the course.
Throughout the course, you'll cover:
- The main techniques that are used in the production of sake and how they influence style and quality
- The principal and speciality categories of sake
- The sake industry and the commercial importance of sake in the Japanese and export markets
- The principles behind the storage, selection and service of sake
- Tutored tastings of at least 37 sakes
- How to taste sake and evaluate quality, identity and price, using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting Sake® (SAT)
On successful completion of the course, sake enthusiasts will gain a deep understanding of why a sakes tastes the way it does and the factors that influence its style and quality. You’ll be able to describe the characteristics of the principal sake categories and give information on the key factors influencing style, quality and price. If you work with sake, you will be in an excellent position to advise management, to answer customer queries authoritatively, and to make informed selections of sakes in a broad variety of situations.

- Study Materials:
- Study pack - Students will receive the WSET Level 3 Award in Sake course study prior to their first classroom session at the school. The course study pack consists of the course text book, course specification document and a laminated tasting card.
- Use of Professional ISO Tasting glasses - ISO glasses are designed to provider users with a standardised assessment for all types of wine. Use of ISO glasses during your lessons is included in the course fee. These will be set for you upon arrival to each class to use throughout the lesson. If you wish to continue your tasting practice outside of the classroom, you are able to purchase a supplemental set of 6 Wine With Jimmy ISO glasses. An option to add this to your course booking will be available in your basket. If you opt to purchase a supplemental set of ISO tasting glasses, these will be available for you to collect at your first class. Delivery can also be arranged upon request to UK addresses only - an additional delivery fee would apply.
- Examination: The Level 3 Award in Sake is comprised of two essential units of study. Unit 1 focuses on providing you with a deep theoretical and technical understanding of sake while Unit 2 focuses on developing your tasting skills. Both units are examined in person at West London Wine School on the same evening, with a short break between the papers. A mark of 55% required in all sections to pass.
- Certification: All students who pass will be issued with a certificate suitable for framing and a lapel pin.
PLEASE NOTE: Students MUST read the course textbook and complete the online e-modules PRIOR to their first session of the course. Home revision in addition to classroom attendance is essential to succeed on this course! Students will receive their course study pack in the post prior to their first class.
