Event Description
Join us as we taste the full range of Barbaresco from arguably the best wine co-operative in the world, Produttori del Barbaresco. The tasting will showcase the wonderfully open 2020 vintage, all crafted from the noble grape variety Nebbiolo. The 2020 Barbaresco vintage is widely regarded as an excellent, high-quality year, producing wonderfully expressive wines with ripe fruit, floral notes, and supple tannins, making them approachable young, while still offering aging potential.. The Produttori only produce their range of Riserva ‘Cru’ Barbarescos in years that they deem to be of high quality, and with 2020 being a lock down vintage, extra time, care and attention was given to the vines in this hugely impressive (and drinkable) vintage. Each of the nine wines perfectly captures the individual character of its respective vineyard, presenting a brilliant snapshot of the very best Barbaresco has to offer.
At Produttori del Barbaresco a quiet transformation has taken place in recent years that is nothing short of remarkable. Far from a sleepy, old-fashioned cooperative winery, the Produttori have stepped up their game big time over the last decade or so. The new winery is decked out with gleaming fermentation tanks, while old, large casks have been put out to pasture, replaced by medium size casks that are far more conducive to creating these nothworthy wines. The wines remain reference-points, though, especially in years in which the Produttori make their flagship Riservas. The 2020s are displaying a beautiful brightness both aromatically and on the palate. Taken as a whole, they combine the rich and ripe fruit of warmer vintages with the elegant, 'vertical' personality –- as winemaker Aldo Vacca would say – of the cooler ones. The Produttori's Riservas remain some of the greatest values in the realm of fine, cellar worthy reds.
In 2025 Produttori del Barbaresco were also honored in the Wine Spectator's Top 100 wines of the year, with the 2021 Barbaresco coming in at 7th place in the top 100. We will be kicking off the tasting with this wine from magnum, so we can all raise a hearty toast to this most overachieving of Italian wine producers before diving into the nine wines of the 2020 vintage.
Wines on Tasting (10 wines)
- Arbaresco 2021 - '94 pts - Wine Spectator, 95+ pts Robert Parker.com, 95 pts Ian d'Agata
- Barbaresco Pajè 2020 - Kerin O'Keefe 95 pts - The 2020 Pajè Riserva is a beautiful wine starting with its enticing scents of dog rose, violet, eucalyptus, new leather and white pepper
- Barbaresco Muncagota 2020 - Kerin O'Keefe 95 pts - The 2020 Muncagota Riserva opens with an intense balsamic fragrance recalling camphor and eucalyptus that accent forest floor, hay and woodland berry
- Barbaresco Pora 2020 - Kerin O'Keefe 94 pts - 2020 Pora from Produttori is a generous wine, delivering aromas and flavors of crushed cranberry, succulent cherry, star anise, wild herb and hazelnut. Polished tannins offer smooth support
- Barbaresco Rio Sordo 2020 - Kerin O'Keefe 96 pts - Aromas of pine forest, dark spice, new leather and hint of truffle form the enticing nose on the impressive 2020 Rio Sordo Riserva
- Barbaresco Asili 2020 - Kerin O'Keefe 97 pts - I always find the Asili to be most fragrant of the Produttori single-vineyard Riservas and the stunning 2020 doesn’t disappoint, offering alluring aromas of dog rose, eucalyptus, new leather, forest floor and woodland berry along with a whiff of sun-warmed hay
- Barbaresco Ovello 2020 - Kerin O'Keefe 95 pts - The 2020 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is a massive, packed wine. Graphite, crushed rocks, dried herbs and cedar open first. Ovello tends to produce a more linear style of Barbaresco, and that is very much the case here as well
- Barbaresco Montefico 2020 - Kerin O'Keefe 96 pts - The most closed of the Riservas at this stage, the 2020 Montefico has aromas and flavors recalling red berry, spice, tobacco and forest floor. It’s brooding and youthfully austere, with firm tannins
- Barbaresco Montestefiano 2020 - Kerin O'Keefe 97 pts - 'Absolutely gorgeous, boasting aromas of violet, forest floor, red-skinned fruit and new leather
- Barbaresco Rabaja 2020 - Kerin O'Keefe 97 pts - Showing great structure and balance, the radiant Rabajà entices with intense aromas of forest berry, underbrush, new leather and dark spice
