Event Description

From Bacchus to Pinot Noir and through grapes you have never heard of before (Madeleine Angevine?) England is now making a splash on the world's wine scene. Meet Matt Hodgson from Grape Britannia and discover more.

Vineyards were planted here in Roman times, so we know it can be done. Brave pioneers around our island have been learning over the last two decades all about the vineyard topographical features necessary for making good wine.

The sparkling wine case has long been clear - we knoe England does that well, but in recent years still wines have been garnering attention as well. One English wine was recently voted the best single varietal in the world (we'll try a recent vintage)!

Three years ago Decanter's World of Wine Awards gave a platinum medal to Wimbirri Vineyard in Norfolk for their Bacchus. It was a ground breaking moment - a reputable panel judging blind had concluded Winbirri made the best single varietal wine at its price point that year.

Winbirri sold all remaining stock within days. We'll taste a more recent (and equally good) vintage of that exact same wine.

We'll also taste a complex blend of grape varieties in a white wine from Hampshire and a delicious Pinot Noir made in a beautiful vineyard over at Ross-on-Wye.

It turns out it's not just about choosing the right grape varieties for our climate - sometimes it's the right choice of 'clone' (sub-version) as well.

Come and meet Matt Hodgson, who so believes this is the moment to start shouting about what England can do he opened his wine shop in Cambridge 2 years ago exclusively focused on UK wine. He carries hundreds of different lines.

Simply book your spaces and we'll send a website link for ordering the wines (Matt is giving us 15% off). We will also send instructions for joining the Zoom call from a desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile phone. Zoom is proving to be a very sociable medium for wine tasting so we can guarantee you'll have fun! Each session lasts just over an hour.
