Spotlight on Valpolicella

Having just returned from a holiday to Lake Garda in Northern Italy, I thought I would give an insight in to the wines of the Valpolicella wine region which encompasses the vineyards surrounding the beautiful city of Verona.

The red wines of Valpolicella are predominantly produced using the Corvina grape.

These wine really highlight how different methods of production can create totally different wines.

‘Valpolicella’ DOC wines are light in body. They are easy-drinking wines that are very popular with the locals. The flavour profile is red cherries and red currant with a touch of spice.

Here is a very enjoyable example from the Wines Society.

Valpolicella, Tenuta Novare 2022 - £11.99 – The wine society

At the other end of the scale is ‘Amarone della Valpolicella’. These wines use grapes that are dried out before fermentation in order to concentrate the sugars and reduce water content. The result is a powerful, full-bodied wine that is often high in alcohol, with ripe, rich bramble fruit and Mocha. These wines are capable of long term aging for increased complexity. All of this winemaking and aging comes at a price though. Prices start at £15 and can go well in the hundreds of pounds!

Amarone Della Valpolicella – Lidl- £15.99

This example from Lidl is priced at £15.99, which represents good value for an Amarone. You get the ripe black fruit and full-body and a long finish.
