Event Description
A lot of people think of Australian wine as reliable, fruit-driven wines however the wine scene is a lot more complex as is its climate. There are hot, warm, cool, dry and wet locations in Australia and they all make totally different wines. There are also a growing number of small boutique wineries where the winemakers concentrate on producing limited quantities of hand-made wines of superb quality (in contrast to the mass-produced big brands) – these are the wines we will be tasting. Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, & dry Riesling!
New Zealand is fast becoming the benchmark for New World Sauvignon Blanc (from Marlborough), but there is much more to these two islands than that. South Island also produces some wonderful Pinot Noir & stunning zesty Riesling, whilst the warmer climate of North Island is home to delicious Cabernet and Merlot and fuller, softer, riper, white wines.
South African winemakers have never been making such exciting wines in a such a broad range of styles. Clobbered by Covid this country's small band of winemakers (many of whom do not own their own vineyards) are crafting juicy reds, classic oaky reds, full bodied ripe whites and linear, fresh whites from grpae varieties like Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, white Rhone grapes, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauzignon and Syrah amnogst mant others.
We will also be looking at wine labels at this tasting, and decode the jargon!
