South Africa has undergone a transformation since the mid 1990s with a new generation of exciting winemakers working hard to increase the quality and range of wine styles made in the Western Cape.
As Tim Atkin MW quotes in his annual report: “South Africa is a beautiful country with a tenacious people who have, time and time again, proven that, during times of adversity, we unite in our cause and prevail”.
There is increasing interest in soils and which grapes to grow where, reds are changing and we are now seeing a broader range of styles, grapes and new vineyard regions.
Despite the challenges of drought, the economy and Covid, this new wave of winemakers, most of whom were not in existence pre 1994, are making exciting, high quality wines.
This tasting will bring you up to date with everything you need to know about South African wines today. We'll talk about winemakers such as AA Badenhorst, Crystallum, Leeu Passant, Alheit Vineyards, Storm Wines, David & Nadia, Thorne & Daughters, Eben Sadie and Dominic Rall.
This tasting will incude six specially chosen premium fine wines from some of the producers mentioned above and others, all of which are available in the UK.
Styles will range from well known grapes like Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon through to lesser known styles such as Rhone blends and Cinsault.
