On 24th May 1976 Stephen Spurrier put together a blind tasting competition as part of the bicentennial celebrations of the USA in Paris to allow the best palates of the wine world to pit the French Burgundy and Bordeaux giants against the new upstarts from California. This legendary event became known as the Judgement of Paris.
1973 Chateau Montelena from California took the top spot amongst the white wines and 1973 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon came top amongst the reds beating two first growths from Bordeaux - and so the world woke up to the great wines that California had to offer.
Jonny experienced a version of this iconic tasting in California earlier this year as part of the California Wine Institute Educator week and he will be creating a version of it at this tasting using a range of wines from high quality producers in Burgundy, Bordeaux and California, many of whom featured in the 1973 event at the wine school's first ever £75 Masterclass tasting.
For this fine wine experience, we'll taste the following wines:
Each pair of wines will be tasted blind (not necessarily in the order above!) and we will be scoring the wines out of 20.
This tasting includes an aperitif, six premium wines, a digital presentation, hand out notes and a selection of artisan cheeses.
