Event Description
This tasting will showcase an array of elegant, clean, crisp whites from refreshing Austrian Gruner Veltliner to aromatic Hungarian Tokaj - plenty of new and exciting wines to try! Many of these countries' great wines are overlooked because the grape varieties are unfamiliar, with hard to pronounce names. People often assume the wines will be sweet and hesitate to pick them off the shelf. Tonight we will lift the curtain on these great wines, challenge your preconceptions and introduce you to some new favourites!
Germany
A country that many people can remember (for all the wrong reasons) from its wines in the 1980s. Names syuch as "Blue Nun" still send a shiver down many wine lovers backbones to this day. However, Germany gave the world of wine a unique and fantastic grape variety - Riesling. Tonight we will sample this classic grape variety from its home country and we promise you that amy negative preceptions you may have about German wines will be challenged!
Austria
The vast majority of Austrian wines are bone dry and beautifully crisp; the apple and lime filled Gruner Veltliner, is often an instant favourite with Sauvignon Blanc fans, with its peppery finish. It is also an excellent match for many spicy dishes- a perfect match for that Chinese takeaway!
Hungary
One of the most famous wines in the world is produced in Hungary - the dessert wine Tokaji. During the 19th century, Tokaji was the "Cristal" of it's day, being the wine of choice for Kings and Emperors across Europe. Tonight we will sample both a dry and a lusciously sweet version alongside some blue cheese.
Romania
Romania is one of the world's largest wine producers and fifth largest among European wine-producing countries. In 2018 it produced around 5.2 million hectolitres of wine. In recent years, Romania has attracted many European business people and wine buyers, due to the affordable prices of both vineyards and wines compared to other wine-producing nations
