Event Description
Join us for a very special evening as we host Norrel Robertson, MW and champion of Old Vine Garnacha. Norrel will be talking us through a range of his wines, including fabulous Macabeo and stunning Syrah/Viognier alongside his very special Garncha.
Already confirmed on the lineup we'll be tasting:
- Manda Huevos (a very special Macabeo, vinified in concrete eggs, with a knowing wink to White Burgundy)
- El Mondongo (a beautiful Garnacha made from fruit picked over 4 miniscule parcels, described by the Wine Society as 'a wine of immense depth and class, only 5,000 bt per year)
- Mango del Brujo (a carefully constructed blend of Garnacha with 15% Syrah and a further 15% Provechon and Mauzuelo, more savoury with darker fruit from the immense diurnal range up in the Monte Armantes)
- Dos Dedos De Frente (the wildchild of the selection! a co-ferment of Syrah with 8% Viognier, giving startling floral aromatics and succulent mouthfeel and body)
- El Puño (incredibly well balanced Garnacha with complex mineral and herbal notes of garrigue, vines here are 70-100 years old and the intensity of their expression is quite profound)
- El Cismático (a delicate recounting of the Garnacha grape, more crushed violet and pencil shavings here, a wine which opens up in the glass to hint at a long and evolving future, the marked acidity giving it a graceful edge which offsets the 14.5% alcohol)
A mouth-watering line up, I am sure you will agree! But for those of you who don't know about Norrel, you can read all about his incrdible career as a consultant winemaker around the world, culminating in his decision to settle down in Calatayud and champion the local Garnacha vines.
Today, Norrel's company, El Escocés Volante (the flying Scotsman) owns many incredible vineyards high up in the mountains of Aragon. His wines are exported to 15 different countries, and feature a host of different grapes. Alongside wife Sharon and their two sons, this family business is evolving and thriving in this wild corner of Spain.
