Event Description
An evening of New World showstoppers from two contrasting regions. South Africa's unique contribution to the world of wine comes from its history and climate, while wines from the USA firmly rival the best made in Europe. Come and discover more.
South Africa has a long history of wine production going back 400 years. Since it opened up to the world in the post-apartheid era, the quality of its winemaking has risen dramatically.
Chunky, chocolatey reds and elegant whites are now the order of the day, served up by a precocious band of young, cutting edge winemakers.
The USA seems to offer two contradictory wine images. There is a sea of cheap, branded wine sold by the container load in supermarkets, but there is also an exclusive and expensive world of boutique Napa Valley wineries and hidden gems from Sonoma and Oregon.
We will discover strawberry scented red Zinfandel (not the pink stuff), creamy soft Chardonnay and a taste of Napa.
During the evening we will cover:
- understanding the influence of climate
- fascinating Pinotage grape variety
- the expensive taste of Napa Valley
- gorgeous old vine Zinfandel
- emulating the Bordeaux blend
All tastings include: a minimum of 6 wines sourced locally so you can find them easily if you like them, full tasting notes, use of professional tasting glasses and nibbles.
(Note, this evening is part of our core 8-week World of Wine course - book the 8 evening course and save £50! It's flexible, so if you have to skip an evening let us know in advance and you can pick it up next time it runs).
All our courses can be purchased as a Gift either as a dated or undated voucher.
