Event Description
This course is an opportunity to sample 6 wines from the most famous region of premium wines in the world – Bordeaux.
We explore all aspects of Bordeaux in this tasting; both dry and sweet white wine and four “Clarets” for which the region is world famous, At the end of the course you will know your “left bank” form your “right bank” and understand the somewhat confusing systems of appellations and quality classifications in the region.
Alternatively, just enjoy some lovely wine from the comfort of your own home in good company.
Week 1 – Wednesday 25th August
We start with a white Bordeaux AC, a 50% blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, aged for 7 months in oak. Then onto a “Bordeaux Superieur” red as a gentle introduction to the world of Claret, 40% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc from the outstanding 2016 vintage.
- G de Chateau Guiraud Blanc Sec Bordeaux AC 2019 – Retail Price £19.99
- Chateau Grand Lys Bordeaux Superieur 2016 – Retail Price £11.00
Week 2 – Wednesday 1st September
The sweet wines of Sauternes and Barsac are rightly regarded as justifying Bordeaux’s reputation on their own, even without all that lovely red wine. Luscious sweetness is balanced by high acidity and powerful aromatic flavours – try with Roquefort cheese to truly appreciate it. We then move onto the Graves region. This left bank wine region is often overlooked for the more famous Medoc region to the north. A blend of 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon produces a fruit-forward style for early drinking.
- DV By Chateau Doisy Vedrines Barsac 2016 – Retail Price £13.75 (half bottle)
- Chateau Trebiac Graves 2017 – Retail Price £14.50
Week 3 – Wednesday – 8th September
We now visit one of Bordeaux’s most well-known appellations – Saint Emilion. This right bank wine region is famed for its Merlot dominated wines grown on limestone and clay-based soils. Here we have a Grand Cru wine, 96% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc from 2014. We have to end our visit of course in the Medoc with a 2009 vintage wine from one of the appellations less well-known – Listrac. This classic blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc & 2% Petit Verdot has developed beautifully to display complex aromas and soft tannins
- Chateau Puy Blanquet St Emilion Grand Cru 2014 – Retail Price £24.00
- Chateau Lamothe Bergeron Haut Medoc 2012 – Retail Price £21.95
