Event Description
This session of our “World of Wine Grapes” course (see HERE for more details) takes a look at two grapes that are perhaps at their best in blends, which can also fly solo.
In Bordeaux, Sémillon (often without the é outside France) does a double-act with the more famous Sauvignon Blanc (see Week 8) in the white wines with both dry and sweet wines. We’ll try both styles, but there’ll also be something in a very different style from Down Under.
Grenache thrives in that swathe of the Mediterranean running from the southern Rhône over the border into northeast Spain. Here, often in partnership with other grapes, it makes full and throaty wines such as Châteauneuf du Pape and Priorat, but it’s also found in South Australia both in blends and as a solo perform – we’ll explore all three regions.
The tasting will include some cheese and crackers to compliment the wines and will include three examples each of a white grape and a red one, with the aim of demonstrating how the same basic raw material can be moulded in different ways, according to the place where the grapes grow and the desires of the winemakers.
